Clothes help to define status in all cultures who use them. So the people who are focusing on clothes that various groups within society use are noticing the symptom, rather than any issue. Also, these sartorial variations and grouping may have some survival or success value for a group, otherwise they would tend to disappear over time (and some clearly are).
