The airlines need to show up as the cheapest option on Expedia or Orbitz to be able to get the highest percentage of seats filled, and yet they have a low profit per seat (in economy, it is sometime negative). So to trim any more costs, they need to actually have a price that is lower than what they charge you. In other words, to stay in business, they are going to have to sink lower an lower on the ethical scale, until they are simply ripping your off once you are on the plane and have no choice.
